• While thanking you for printing the article concerning my suggestions for strengthening the law in respect of overloaded and unsafe HGVs (CM 5-11 Nov), may! point out a mistake.

The article says I wanted to ban people for "five or ten years". I have said no such thing. My reference to banning concerned vehicles, and in my notes which I sent you I suggested that an offending vehicle could be banned from commercial use for "up to three months".

limn see why Charles Sheffield of ADT called my idea "crackers". It would not be worthwhile to sell a vehicle with only a short ban. It would, however, act as a deterrent to breaking the law for commercial reasons, which is unfair to law-abiding operators.
