A CALL TO ARMS AT CROYDON.

Croydon Sub-area of the C.M.U.A. held what the chairman, Mr. Frank F. Fowler, styled a " call to arms " meeting. last week.

Major James Milner, M.P., said that Members of the House of Commons fully recognized the importance of the road-transport industry, but, until it was so organized that it could speak with one voice, there was little chance of its being relieved of its present burdens. In his view, he said, road transpint was not only a vast industry in itself, but was vital to every other trade.

Mr. W. A. \Vinson, president of the C.M.U.A., after dealing with aspects of the Baillie and T.A.C. reports, said that licence renewals should be automatic where modification was not sought, and the period of tenure should be five years.

Mr. F. J. Speight, chairman of the passenger committee of the London and HomeCounties Division, also spoke.

• A resolution, calling the attention of the Government, through the Minister of Transport, to the wide disparity between the actual operation of the Road Traffic Acts, and the original intentions, as expressed by members of both Houses of Parliament during discussion of the Bills, was carried unanimously. '

Black Country in Lighter Vein.

Over 104 guests sat down at the annual supper of the West Bromwich and District Area of the C.M.U.A. last week. The chair• was taken by Mr. W. A. Standley, supported by Mr. L. W. Gupwell, chairman of the West Midland Division, Mr. S. Macadam, Mr. W. Shotton and Mr. J. F. Bishop, among others.

Mr. E. J. Shopland and Mr. Stallworthy, clerk and deputy clerk respectively to the West Midland Licensing Authority, were among those present.

B20 S.T.R. BREAKS ALL RECORDS.

S.T.R., The Commercial Motor costs expert, is this year. eclipsing all previous records established in his programmes of lectures. His services are being sought to such an extent that his time is practically booked up until well into the New Year. Further lectures have been arranged as follow:—

Hull Sub-area A.R.O., January 12; South London Sub-area A.R.O., Amersham Hotel, New Cross, 8 p.m., January 24.

B.R.F. to Stage "Itoad Display.

On December 14, at 5 p.m., Lord Wolmer will open a display which has been staged by the B.R.F. on the premises of Stewart and Ardern, Ltd., Berkeley Square, London, W.1.

An attractive window setting is to be arranged by way of an introduction to an elaborate model of the B.R.F. 's conception of a modern road system, on which vehicles will be shown in motion. The model will be representative of a twin-carriageway road, with cycle tracks and special facilities for pedestrians, fly-over crossings and clover-leaf junctions. It is proposed that the display shall remain open until Christmas.

New A.R.O. Bolton Committee.

There was a good attendance at a Bolton A.R.O. meeting last week, when addresses were given by Mr. F. G. Bibbings, A.R.O. Yorkshire Area secretary, and Mr. F. Winterbottom,

East Lancashire Area secretary. A new committee of eight operators was elected, and members are as follow:—

Messrs. C. Hodgkinson, Charles Walinsley, E. Knowles, A. Catterall, A. Melia, Lambert Fletcher, W. Allen and A. Smith.

B.R.F. to Supply Lantern Slides.

• After January 1, the B.R.F. will be in a position to supply a series of lantern slides for use in connection with road propaganda work.
