Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

18-tonne boxvan. They have hard lives, but we are confident we can track down one in decent condition and still have change from €10,000.

As a rule 18-tonners get a hard life from the moment they join a fleet to the day they are traded in for a fresh piece of metal. The used market tends to struggle to meet demand, though, because operators keep them until all they are fit for is disposal.

Only rental companies trade in shorter time spans to keep fresh stock on their fleets and meet customers' demands.

But unperturbed we set out with £10,000 to see what we can find. First up is an MAN M2000 box with a day cab. It's a 25ft (7.6m) GRP body and comes with a tail-lift.The price is £9,450 and we haven't even lifted the phone unusually the price is in the ad.

It is plated 1999 but we are convinced we can find something newer for our money. We get a bit of a reality check with the Swedes as everything they have is way outside our budget.Volvo has a 52-plate FLE 220 almost double our budget, while a Scania P94 plated in 2002 isn't far behind. We don't reveal our budget and promise to call back if we get a chance, though don't think the salesman will hold his breath. Mercedes-Benz comes up trumps though with an X-reg Atego 1823 with a day cab in all-white.

Service history

Mileage is high, but it's in decent condition and comes with a genuine service history. Well, it should do as a franchised dealer is punting it, but you can't take anything for granted. Push comes to shove and he will take £11,250 but no less, We thank him for his time and move on.

An identical Atego 1823 is also available but it is 12 months younger; Renault has plenty of Premium eurtainsiders; lveco is awash with 7.5-tonners.When we do find 18-tonners they are too young and £10,000 would only represent a deposit and a finance deal. •
