minutes' rest in eight hours A SPOT CHECK revealed that a British driver driving to Ireland from Holland had little more than 20 minutes of rest in nearly eight hours of driving.

Mark Connor, of Manchester, who is employed by Dutch operator HSF Logistics By, was ordered to pay £415 in fines and costs by Wirral magistrates.

He had pleaded guilty to one offence of driving for more than 4.5 hours without taking the required break,one offence of taking insufficient daily rest and one offence of exceeding the daily driving limit.

Traffic examiner Richard Jackson told magistrates that in December, an HSF Logistics BV artic driven by Connor was checked atTwelve Quays, Birkenhead. The vehicle was laden with chicken on a journey from Nijmegen and Dublin.

The offences were detected when Connor produced his charts to traffic examiner Joanne Henharen. He had driven for seven hours and 52 minutes with a break of only 23 minutes, the maximum consecutive rest he had taken was seven hours 34 minutes, and Connor had driven for a total of 12 hours and 50 minutes.

Magistrates fined Connor 1100 for each offence and ordered him to pay £115 costs
