Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A REVERSION to cylinder head main

tenance at fixed mileage intervals is mentioned in the annual report of Mr. W. M. Hall, general manager of Liverpool Corporation Passenger Transport Department. A reduction in the emission of smoke is associated with the change. and it is anticipated that savings in fuel consumption will more than offset the increased labour charges compared with the previous practice of waiting until more general engine maintenance is needed.

Among other technical developments mentioned in the :report are investigations into the use of a.c. generators, which are stated to produce an initial saving in cost of batteries and generating equipment as well as reducing battery weight with the additional possibility of increased life.

The year 1961/2 had been a difficult one financially, the report stated. The deficit on the year's working amounts to £346,559, compared with one of £274,516 for the previous year. The principal reasons for the considerable increase in working expenses experienced during the year were the full effect of the wages award of Ils. granted early in 1961 and the 3d. per gallon surcharge on the already high rate of taxation on fuel_ A fares increase came into effect in October, 1961, giving six months of increased returns within the financial year, but the proposals to increase the minimum fare to 3d. were not granted and the resulting yield is estimated to have been reduced by £135,000.
