RICHARD TURIITT. a barrister, has been appointed as the new Traffic Commissioner for the Eastern Traffic Area. Turfitt, who is 37, will start his new job on I May. He is replacing Geoffrey Simms, who retired last year.
Before his appointment. Turfitt headed the Health & Safety Executive's litigation and enforcement advisory team. He was also legal adviser to Lord Newton's inquiry into the Buncefield explosion.
Senior Traffic Commissioner Philip Brown says Turfitt's "experience and calibre" will be an asset to the Traffic Commissioners.
He adds: "Traffic Commissioners hold licence applicants and holders to account and ensure they operate with good repute, financial standing and professional competence to deliver services to their customers and passengers. It is an important role, and one in which 1 am sure Turfitt will excel."
The Eastern Traffic Area covers a wide area of eastern England, including Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire. Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Leicestershire, most of Lincolnshire. Norfolk, Northamptonshire and Suffolk. Most of the area's public inquiries are heard in Cambridge.
