Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

This year's noise tests took the usual form: a test of in-cab noise at tickover and while driving at a constant speed, plus a test of noise ingress. This consisted of measuring the noise levels at the lower bunk while a noise source—an unsilenced diesel compressor, producing far more noise than any fridge unit—was placed at a set distance and angle from the cab.

The Daf was a star performer, with a well silenced engine, and it performed to the highest standards in the noise ingress test. This was a pre-production model; production vehicles will have even more insulation material.

The Mercedes, Volvo and Scania also showed the benefits of modern design, though (as usual) the ultrarefined MAN outshone even them at speed. The mighty Actros just shaded the Daf and Volvo when it came to noise ingress but the difference of 0.2dB(A) is not detectable in practice.

The Scania suffered from too much engine noise: its tickover performance was mediocre and while its measured noise levels at speed were OK, turbo whine was irritatingly insistent. The Renault performed well considering its relatively small cab, though the engine note was again irritating.

The Foden's Cummins engine was its strong point, delivering commendably little tickover noise and competitive quietness at speed.
