IT SAYS MUCH for the esteem in which the Press holds Bertil Haggh, Volvo's chief engineer, that, despite the strike of London bus and Underground railway workers on March 10, there were no absentees from his retirement reception in the centre of London. Journalists arrived by taxi, bicycle, on foot and cadged lifts.
Bertil, who was with Volvo for 39 years, already believed that the British technical Press was the world's most expert, but its tribute to him, which touched him greatly, convinced him that it was also the most dedicated.
What he may not have appreciated is that Londoners are now completely inured to transport strikes, which are no longer regarded even as a challenge.
