This was at the .conclusion of the first day's hearing of a series of applications by Brunskill for a new A licence specifying 20 tippers and variations to existing licences, to enable the company to carry "mainly goods for the South Durham Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., as required ".

The first day of the hearing was taken up with evidence given by Mr. A. R. Smalcs, on behalf of South Durham, who tbld the Authority that his company would have to consider restricting production if it did not get any transport relief.

He said that if the applications were granted it would be possible for South Durham to utilize the vehicles in both directions carrying limestone, coal or ore inwards, and steel outwards.

The applications, which were adjourned until May 13 and 14, were opposed by British Road Services, Siddle C. Cook Ltd., Sunter Bros. Ltd., A. Stevens (Haulage) Ltd., R. Durham and Sons Ltd. and Econofreight Ltd.
