THE advice given by Sir John Maxwell, 'chairman of the Northern Traffic Commissioners, to Newcastle Corporation to abandon the trams in favour of troileybuses (as reported elsewhere in this issue) has elicited an important statement from Alderman Richard Mayne, who has been chairman of the municipal transport committee for many years.

Pointing out that immediate replacement would require borrowing a large sum, Alderman Mayne mentioned that the Committee favoured gradual replatement. It wished to utilize the existing capital value of the_ undertaking so far as possible, and 'this would be done by substituting buses as each section of tram tra.k • reqoired renewal.

" If only the corporation would refrain, for a few years, from taking the profits from the undertaking for other purposes, the replacement Could be done in eight years without any bother," he declared. It is intended to add six more trolleybuses to the fleet of 3.1 at present in use.

MANY EXCURSION LICENCES GRANTED.

THERE were indications of the preparagons that are being made by the railways and bas companies for the summer traffic at a sitting of the East Midland Traffic Commissioners in Nottingham., on Monday. In the main, the applications were for permission to operate excursions from various points in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire to

East Coast resorts, including the Lincolnshire Show at Louth.

Despite opposition by the railways, most of the road operators' applications were successful.

At the outset, the chairman (Mr. J. H. Stick), referring to excursion fares, said : "The question of free carriage of children will have to be dealt with when the Minister gives a decision on the appeal which ha' been heard. We .do not want any submission from either side."
