Comparing types of • vehicle for urban traffic, Mr. Horace Woolley, manager of Birmingham Co-operative Society's traffic department. and chairman of the Birmingham branch of the Industrial Transport Association, told Leicester transport managers, last week, that for 'runs involving frequent halts, such as -bread and milk deliveries, petrol vehicles were less economic than light electric vans, or horsed vehicles. He prophesied a wide futtire for electric vehicles on' specialist services, such as bread and milk distributing rounds.

He had experimented with .the mechanical-horse type of vehicle in coal distribution from wharves. and had • found that it could deliver 66 tons and cover 213 miles in 57 running hours at a cost of £4 10s. Owing to its not having to wait for reloading, it could save l hour daily by comparison with an ordinary .motor vehicle which did not incorporate a detachable tractive unit.

Mr. Woolley was addressing the recently formed T.T.A. Leicester branch, the chairman of which is Mr. C. D. Jackson, traffic manager of .Wolsey, Ltd., and the secretary, Mr. A. E. Glasby.

Joint Meeting at Coventry.

Members of the local branch of A.R.O. and the C.M.U.A. Met at Coventry last week to consider business following the merger of the two associations. New officers were elected as follow:— Chairman, Mr. J. Morton; vicechairman, Mr. W. H. Mauseley ; bon. secretary, Mr. A. Hornby; committee, Messrs. Knight, Pritchard, Goddard, Horobin, Grimley, Chilliugsworth, Tacon, Wilkins, Eagles, , Langley, Batchelor and Wilson. Messrs. Manseley and Wilson were appointed to serve on the area council at Birmingham, together with the chairman and secretary.

It was announced that Mi. 3. Morton had been elected to the national council of the C.M.U.A., also to the employers' panel of the West Midland Conciliation Board. Mr. Mauseley is to act as deputy on the employers' panel.
