MITE, sixth annual meeting of the 1 Ballast, Sand and Allied Trades Association was held on March 25. The chairman, Mr. A, J, Arnold, presided. He mentioned the Weights and Measures Bill, dealing with the legalization of the cubic yd. as a measure of capacity and making necessary the use of a calibrater on all vehicles purporting to sell by that measure. The Bill has not been read for the second time, owing to greater calls on Parliamentary work.

Mr. Arnold put forward a plea that it should be urged forward, There was a tremendous amount of unfair competition, brought about by one quantity being bought and another sold, also by pits not being. sufficien tly careful in the quantities loaded on to lorries.

During the year over 350,000 delivery tickets were issued to members, or 110,000 more than in the previous year. Every delivery, said Mr. Arnold, should be accompanied by an Association ticket. During, the year, . over 1 00.0 loading-line, plates had been issued. The schedule of vehicle costing and. haulage rates for the ballast and-. sand industry had proved, satisfactory.

Another point raised by the chairman dealt with the many parts of the Traffic Acts Which required amending, particularly that concerning the anomaly of gross loads to unladen weights.

Other speakers were Mr. H. E.

Peirce and Mr. K. C. Green, Mr. Arnold was re-elected chairman and Mr. A. F. Shaw elected vice-chairman.
