Fines and costs totalling £113 5s. were imposed at Scunthorpe police court last week, as a result of secret checks on lorries on what is known as the " steel run," between Scunthorpe, Dudley, Worcester and Wolverhampton. It was alleged against five hauliers that they employed lorry drivers without their having 10 consecutive hours' rest, and that some worked for more than •11 hours, Comparisons between the records of checks and the log books of the drivers showed that there bad been systematic falsification of records.
Films amounting to £76 and 25 guineas costs were imposed upon the employers and four drivers were fined a total of £11.
Official Orders in February.
Amongst the orders for motor vehicles given out by Government Departments during February last were the following :—War Department for Albion., Morris-Commercial and Thornycroft six-wheeled chassis ; Air Ministry, Dennis motor mowers ; G.P.O. authorities, Albion van chassis ; Crown Agents for the Colonies, Commer chassis from Rootes, Ltd., and lorries from Morris Export Industries, Ltd.
Good Bedford Business.
At the general meeting of Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., held last week,Mr. Leslie Walton, chairman, after reviewing the accounts for the past year's working, said that the company sold 48,071 commercial, vehicles and cars in 1935, compared with 40,456 in 1934—an increase of 20.3 per cent. During last year new registrations rose by 53,813 units—an increase of 17.1 per cent.—whilst the sales of the company's products in this country showed an increase of 27.4 per cent., proving that a good proportion of increased business-was obtained. The company also made good headway in the export field.
