Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Are you ready to pay 10% more money each year for your drivers? Do you really think they're worth it—or are you simply planning to deal with the likely impact of the Working Time Directive later, rather than sooner? If that's your attitude then be prepared for the day when your driver workforce departs like the outgoing tide.

The stark reality is that any driver currently earning X for working a 6o-hour week will expect to be earning the same for 48. And if he (or she) doesn't get it they'll go to someone else who will pay that.

The UK HGV driver pool is becoming demonstrably more mobile in two directions—to better employers within the industry, or out of it altogether. If T&G national road transport secretary Danny Bryan is right, expect an 8-10% annual pay claim up to the introduction of the WTD by 2005. We're not saying it's justified; we're saying it's an "expectation". And a strong one at that.
