Hash smuggler gets six years

• A truck passenger has been jailed for six years after pleading guilty to smuggling Elm of cannabis into the UK. The driver escaped punishment due to lack of evidence.
Southampton Crown Court heard that Jamie Lawrence, a property developer based in Spain, arrived at Portsmouth Ferry port in July on board a ferry from St Maio. He was a passenger in the cab of a Oaf tractor.
Customs searched the vehicle and discovered 325kg of cannabis resin under the bunk. Both men were arrested: the driver was released on bail and Lawrence was charged.
Judge lain Hughes told Lawrence that his attempted smuggling was on a commercial scale and he was applying the law as it currently stands and not as it will be in the future.
A Customs spokesman says its main drugs priority is reducing availability of Class A drugs, but he adds: "We continue to uphold the law relating to other illegal drugs, including cannabis."
