Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Miles Brigriall • Twenty-five people were killed and nearly 1,350 suffered serious injuries last year as a result of transport and handling accidents.

Latest figures from the Health & Safety Executive for 1995/6 show that 21 transport employees were killed along with one self-employed person and three members of the public.

The statistics, which do not include road traffic accidents, show there were a further 17,000 injuries that were serious enough to cause at least three days off work.

Six people died and 4,800 were injured while transporting equipment.

However, the transport industry is becoming safer. The total number of accidents only fell marginally, but five fewer employees and six fewer members of the public were killed.

Transport workers suffered on average 112 serious accidents per 100,000 staff. This is well above the average, but is only a quarter the accident rate recorded in the mining and quarrying industry.

The IISE says accidents as a result of manual handling have not fallen. It wants to improve health & safety in the 3.5-million small firms that employ less than 50 employees each and will launch a campaign on this in the new year.
