QTERNER measures would be taken 'against lorry drivers who gave free lifts to workers in and out of Sheffield. This was stated by Sir Stuart Goodwin, chairman of Sheffield magistrates, last week. After a police constable said that he had seen 30 people get off a lorry, Harry Beal, South Street, Sheffield, was fined £9 for using his vehicle for a purpose for which it was unsuitable, making it a other likely danger to road -users. He pleaded guilty and was fined another £1 for not having two mirrors. Sir Stuart; said that it was appreciated that the defendant's action was kindly, but if there had been a slip or a skid, the riders might have been injured. "For this reason we are making your gesture a rather expensive one," he added. A large number of people was getting free lifts every day, and the Bench felt that the position had to be carefully controlled.

LEEDS NEW BUSES A BATCH of 44 71-seat double-deck buses is to be bought by Leeds Corporation at a cost of £231,000. It is expected that these new vehicles, together with the 71-seaters at present in operation, will fulfil the requirements when `the last trams in the city are withdrawn in 1961.
