Volvo's FH12 has long been a favourite the CM Cab Test, and this year's exam?, was no exception. True, there were a N grumbles from other manufacturers le lower-slung FM12 is strictly speaking .7, more fleet-orientated Volvo) but look the interior length and width dimen)ns and you realise that the standard I sleeper cab is hardly huge—only in obetrotter and XL form is it really a 1g-distance unit,

The cab floor is substantially higher Nil the ground than with any of our her test vehicles so the engine hump intrudes much less, increasing the feeling of space. But it's far from being a "proper" flat floor, and the overall headroom is nothing special. It's just as well that the passenger seat folds up forward to give some extra changing space.

As is the way with Volvos, the single bunk is pretty good: the mattress is a proper coil-sprung affair with an extra washable cover, lightly upholstered, to go or top. It provides a decent amount of support, though the overall measurements are not massive: at 2.01m long, it was only just big enough for lep van der Meer, a freelance journalist from Holland who is rather taller than the UK average.

Once you're in place the cab offers plenty of lighting and headroom, along with decent access to the radio and heater controls, which all worked as advertised. The curtains are good too: thick enough to keep you sleeping through the alarm, helped by the decent sound insulation.

Storage is really very good for this size of cab, with a substantial slide-out under-bunk tray and lots of over-screen cubbies. Of course, the quality of the materials used is excellent, and Volvo's choice of colours is relatively restrained.

As long as you're aware of its limitations, the Volvo is a pretty good place to spend the night.
