MOST of the protests voiced to him against the " totting up" of convictions for road offences leading to disqualificat:on were based on misconception, said Mr. Ernest MarpIes, in London on Monday.

A frequent complaint—made particularly by the professional driver—is that a driver could lose his licence by committing three "trivial or technical offences" in three years, he said.

"Let me make this clear, once and for all, that not one of the 26 offences dealt with in.the new penalty system is a trivial offence. Each one is either a serious ' killer ' offence, or at least reflects dangerous or irresponsible behaviour on the roads. Besides, it is long odds that if a driver is caught three times, he will have done the same thing on other occasions without being caught. The good, careful driver has nothing to fear."
