THE ROLL OUTS!

The big manufacturers line up to show off their latest wares at the CV

Show on 5-7 April. CM checks out the sights — and the sites — to see.

The UK's largest gathering of road transport operators sees truck manufacturers out in force from 5-7 April. This year there's a world launch as well as plenty of UK debuts for visitors to climb all over.

It's a measure of the regard in which truck manufacturers now hold the CV Show, at the Birmingham NEC, that MAN has chosen the event for the unveiling of its new TGL, light truck range. The new model was originally set for launch at the giant IAA Hanover Show in Germany, but changes to the specification in order to improve payload delayed the launch. It is aimed squarely at the UK 7.5-tonne sector. The cab is all-new,borrowing much from the TGA tractor line-up, while the engine has been heavily revised in preparation for the new Euro-4 emissions regulations.

Joining the TGL on the MAN-ERF stand will be its recent winner of Commercial Motor's Testers' Choice award, the TGA tractor equipped with D20 engine.

Out in force ERF is presenting its strongest-yet line-up of trucks at the CV Show. As well as a full range of tractors and rigids, including the high-roof Olympic-cabbed ECT,ERF is showing a D20engined 8x4 tipper chassis for the first time in the UK. Outside, operators can find ERF's fuel-efficiency record-breaker — the Cumminspowered ECM 18-tonne rigid.

Also new at Birmingham is the Renault Magnum, making its exhibition debut. The new improved flagship tractor is the centrepiece of the French truck builder's stand. Combining the flat floor Renault cab, with Volvo powertrain and chassis, the new Magnum is an impressive vehicle and well worth a visit. Renault is also debuting its new Master van with Quickshift transmission, as well as showing its full range of commercials.

The renamed Mitsubishi Fuso completes the line-up of new launches at this year's show, with its heavily revised Canter range. Available from 3.5 to 7.5-tonnes, the new Canter comes with an updated engine line-up and stylish new cab —see next week's CM for details.

Isuzu is giving operators a sneak preview of its 7.5-tonner, scheduled for introduction towards the end of the yearn e new cab features a better driver environment. while a new range of common-rail engines give improved power options. Also, watch out for a new electronically controlled automatic transmission.

Not quite on the same scale of innovation as the above, but nevertheless still claiming a UK first, is a new lightweight version of the CF65 18-tonner.It is basically the CF65 with a 50mm shallower frame which saves 150kg in weight and Oyes a 50nun reduction in chassis height. Daf took the wraps off its new 13-litre MX engine at the Hanover truck show last autumn and we'd expected the new unit to show its face at Birmingham, though we've learned that won't be the case.

A 6x4 double-drive tractor takes pride of place on fellow Paccar company Foden's stand. The 80-tonne rated machine is equipped with a top of the range XL high-roof cab with full "Europa" specification, including cab air suspension, luxury trim with wood-effect finish, leather trimmed steering wheel and seats and CD multiplaver.

Breathe easy with LNG Foden has a tractor on the Clean Air Power stand — the company is making its debut at the CV Show. Clean Air will be exhibiting a 6x2 Foden Alpha tractor with a LNG installation. The Foden truck features Caterpillar's C12 dual fuel engine rated at 420hp,The company reckons operators can expect a fuel cost saving of lip/mile by switching to dual-fuel.

Mercedes showed its full hand at Hanover last year in the shape of the newAxor and Atego and these two new models covering the full weight range make their UK show debut at the NEC.TheAtego range now runs from six to 15 tonnes, while the Axor covers all weights above, and both trucks are making a bold show at Birmingham. Also on the Mercedes stand, look out for the limited edition 605hp Black Actros and the newly crowned International Van of the Year, the Vito.

Hanover was the venue for Iveco's latest addition to its range with the launch of the Trakker construction range, replacing the EuroTrakker last year. The Trakker is a rugged, no compromise multi-wheeler range that will appeal to the muckaway fraternity. Aggregate haulers will have to wait until next year for a slimmed down version of Trakker. Iveco is also exhibiting its new limited edition Stralis Executive Space model. Equipped with a new high specification interior and exterior improvements, the Stralis ES was first shown at Hanover last year. Sister company Seddon Atkinson will be sharing Tveco's 1000m2 stand at the NEC and will have an R5 Strato 18tonner and M5 Pacer refuse truck on display.

Scania is exhibiting its International Truck of the Year, the R Series along with the rest of the new truck line-up,the launch of which is now complete. The new P Series eight-wheeler is making its UK debut at the Birmingham show. Equipped with a 380hp version of the 11litre. DC (1-09 engine ,the new tipper chassis has Scania's new extended day cab, some 280mm longer than its predecessor.

The focus was on hospitality at the Volvo stand last year and this year looks to be no different, with just two truck exhibits —a 6x2 FH16 tractor and a walk-through XL cab — scheduled to appear on the Swedish truck builder's stand. Volvo also has an outside display, where the newly introduced FLE 220 Highlander off-road chassis for skip and tipper operation is on show along with an FH tractor and FM eight-wheeler.
