The star of next week's at Show in Birmingham is the new MAN TGL.

Andy Salter takes a close look at the new Munich-built lightweight

EXCLUSIVE

New cab, new transmission, upgraded engines and a revamped chassis are just a few of the features of the new MAN TGL (Trucknology Generation Light) due to be unveiled at next week's show. The new TGL replaces the tried-and-tested range MAN LE 200 and covers the weight class from 7.5-12 tonnes.

As the picture illustrates, the TGL employs a familiar cab from its TGA big brother, and is available in three versions: C, L and LX.L and LX, for the heavier and longer distance applications, use the same cab as in the TGA, while the single-step-entry C cab, likely to be the most popular UK choice, has been modified to sit lower on the chassis.

Variants

Under the cab sits the MAN D08 engine, revised for the TGL launch and now offered in four horsepower variants 150, 180, 206 and 240hp.The latter offering is from the six-cylinder engine, while the four-pot engine is responsible for the other three ratings. New on the four-cylinder at 206hp is the use of a new twostage turbocharger to boost performance throughout the rev range and give the engine an 830Nm maximum torque rating.

We've been awaiting the first application of ZF's automatic sixspeed transmission for some time and it finally makes its debut on the new TGL. Available as an option with all four-cylinder engines, MAN claims safer, more efficient motoring through its use. Standard transmissions are manual offerings from ZF and Eaton, depending on weight and engine rating.

The revamped chassis completes the main changes to the little Austrian-built MAN: a new twobag air suspension is available as an option. while the high-strength frame made of fine-grain steel forms the solid backbone of all TGL vehicles.Tubular cross members ensure a torsionally rigid frame which has a positive effect on the driving features.

All TGLs are fitted with internally ventilated disc brakes, combined with the electronic brake system EBS 2the first time electronic braking has been introduced at this weight sector.

The service brakes are complemented by a new intelligent brake system MAN BrakeMatic. •
