in hand shortly a scheme for the construction of a new road across the north side of the city. The proposed road is intended to relieve traffic on the old east-west highway, which winds up the steep hill from Framwellgate Bridge to the Market Place, and down again to Elvet Bridge. Including the two new bridges that will be necessary over the River Weir, the relief road is estimated to cost nearly £230,000. It will be about 1,000 yards long.
