Sand and Allied Trades Association took place last week in London, when there was an attendance of about 250. Mr. Alan F. Shaw, vice-chairman of the Association, presided, and among the guests were the following;—Mr. A. Strachan Bennion (Chartered Surveyors' Institution), Mr. Malcolm Brereton (Secretary, E.R.F.), Mr. E. J. Brown (Past -Director, London Master Builders' Association), Major H. E. Crawfurd (Chairman, A.L.Q.), Mr. R. W. Sewill (Director and Secretary, A.R.O-.), Major R. A. B. Smith (Director, Cement and Concrete

Association and president-elect, C.M.U.A.).

Major Crawford paid a, great tribute to the outstanding qualities of the late chairman of the Association, Mr. A. J. Arnold, whose passing had occasioned the postponement of the dinner. He referred to the present year as the vintage year in the history of the B.S.A.T.A., and said that in the year that had ended the harvest had been gathered-in resulting from the work that had been done for many years by those prominently connected with the Association, In this connection, he referred particularly to Mr. Frank Wells, the founder chairman, Mr. Ernest J. Brown, and Mr. S. McPherson.

• Major Crawfurd.said he would like to pay his own testimony to the B.S.A.T.A,, because the whole of its being had been wrapped up in the establishment of the rule of fair play.

The constitution of the. Association as a recognized body in the industry was, he said, exemplified by its representation on the Metropolitan and Southeastern Area Wages Boards.

Finally, he referred to the activities of the Association and its endeavours to form a National Ballast and Sand Federation for the industry. He paid particular tribute to the marked abilities of the Association's chairman, Mr. A. F. Shaw.
