ANEW and practical road sweeper and collector has been protected and is being manufactured by Mr. W. J. Lewin, of Lewin Road Sweepers, Burton Street, Dewsbury Road, Leeds, 11.

It is a commendably simple machine but embodies certain unusual features. The Kross brush, which is provisionally protected, is set square across the vehicle under the chassis, the type employed being the Bedford 27 h.p. short-wheelbase 2-tonner suitably mocli

fied. The brush is made up of seven sections, sweeping to a width of 7 ft. 6 ins., and it delivers the sweepings into a vertical conveyer consisting of right and left-hand spirals which carry them into the closed container. An unique feature is the employment of a suction fan which absorbs all dust and cuts out the need for artificial watering In dry weather, as it collects the rarefied dust and delivers it into specially constructed, easily removable bags. The steel body consists of three compartments, the main or centre part for holding sweepings, which has a capacity • of 60 cubic ft., and two side t compartments for the fine dust, each holding

16 cubic ft. A. hand-operated endtipping gear giving an angle of 45 degrees, serves to discharge the contents.

It is claimed that this patent machine will sweep and collect both from the road and channels under all climatic conditions, wet or dry, with the exception of snow.

The brush construction and balance gear give a uniform contact with the road surface, ensuring reliability and a longer life of the brush, which can, however, be removed and replaced in a few minutes.

The sweeping speed varies from 2 m.p.h. to 10 m.p.h., according to circumstances. The sweeper gear embodies only six bearings requiring lubrication.

Brush adjustment and road contact are effected by one screw which operates the balance gear and elves a uniform surface contact which independent of the variations due to uneven roads or to the disposition of the load on the vehicle.

Complete, the vehicle weighs 2 tons 15 cwt. unladen. Its overall dimensions are :—Length, 143 ft. ; height, 7 ft. 4 ins.; width, 7 fa 6 ins. The price is £750, with £15extra if a channel brush be required.
