ROAD haulage costs rose by almost six per cent during the first six months of the year, according to the Road Haulage Association.

The main increases have been in tyres, spare parts and in operational and administrative overheads, including local authority rates.

Charges must be raised by more than the cost increase so that the haulier can achieve a decent return on his capital.

The six per cent cost increase is an average, and figures will differ from county to county.
