Coventry

THE transport committee of the City of Coventry has recommended acceptance of the tender by Transport Vehicles (Daimler) Ltd., Coventry, for 22 rear

engined, double-decker bus chassis with Gardner 6LX engines at a total cost of £71,290, and the tender of Willowbrook Ltd. for 76-seat bodies to Coventry specification to be mounted on the above chassis at a total cost of £78,320. The new buses are for delivery next year.

It will be recalled that last year's decision by Coventry Corporation to accept the lowest tender, and thereby purchase Leyland Atlanteans for the city's first 22 rear-engined buses, caused a local "storm ". The purchase of Coventry-built bus chassis had, up to that time, been almost a tradition in the department.

IN BRIEF Manchester Surplus Increases: Net surplus of Manchester Corporation transport department in the year ended March 31 last was £263,850 compared with a surplus of £14,607 in the previous year. Revenue was £8,086,648 (£7,588,698), passengers carried 352,068 (360,308) and the mileage covered was 44,221,851 (44,600,738). The Corporation's fleet at the end of the year comprised 1,288 double-deck and 55 single-deck motor buses and 61 two-axle double-deck trolleybuses.

Fiat Buses for Ceylon: It is reported from Colombo that the Ceylon Transport Board, after extensive trials, has decided to purchase only Fiat buses in future. It had earlier been decided to buy 326 medium-size and 80 small buses. Of the former 226 were to be Fiats, 60 Leyland and 40 Mercedes-Benz, whilst the smaller buses were to comprise 60 Fiats and 20 B.M.C. models. The decision of the Board was confirmed by a Treasury ruling. Tillingbourne Take Over 448: London Transport has announced that bus routes 448 (Guildford-Peaslake-Ewhurst) and 448A (Guildford bus station-Pewley Way) will be taken over by the Tillingbourne Valley Services Ltd. from August 12. Tillingbourne already operates part of the service on route 448.

P.T.A. Dinner: The annual dinner of the Public Transport Association will be held on November 12 this year, at 735 p.m. in the Connaught Rooms, Great Queen Street, London, W.C.2. One-man Buses for Oxford : The City of Oxford Motor Services are now operating one-man buses between Oxford and High Wycombe and Thame and High Wycombe, A spokesman said this was to effect economies and to assist in maintaining the large number of unprofitable services which already ran in the area. The buses are distinguished by white triangular panels on their front nearside.

Colchester Results: Total traffic revenue of the Colchester Borough Council transport department for the year ended March 31 last was £214,369, compared with' £201,081 in the previous year. This resulted in a net surplus of £2,680 (£8,495). Although the surplus was less this year the department considered the position as gratifying, as increased costs of salaries and wages amounting to £6,260 were absorbed without recourse to a general fares increase.
