LETTERS from other A-licence La holders, which stated that there is a great shortage of tipping vehicles in Hull, were submitted to the Yorkshire Deputy Licensing Authority (Mr. Willoughby Bullock), at York, last Friday, in support of an application by Mr. Charles Acey, of 28, Kirkham

Avenue, Hull. The applicant, who sought permission to operate two additional vehicles under an A-licence, was stated to be largely employed in carting sand and gravel to building estates, and bricks from the riverside wharves.

Mr. S. R. Pitts, for the applicant, said that the difficulty with regard to bricks was that the boats had to be cleared at once, and, as it was not known exactly when they would arrive, it was not possible to hire vehicles beforehand, when the applicant's own motor vehicles were otherwise engaged.

The applicant put in figures showing a steady increase in his work during the past two years. Cross-examined by Mr. Sturge (for the L.N.E. Railway Co.), he said that the fact .that gross earnings had not increased in the same ratio as tonnage carried was not due to rate cutting.

Mr. Sturge suggested that the ren50.n why the applicant's earnings had not risen in proportion to the tonnage was that there had been an increase in the number of tipping vehicles employed in the carriage of building materials in Hull, and haulage rates had :been brought down by competition. Denying this suggestion, Mr. Acey said that the reason lay in the increase in "
