A MULTI-AGENCY roadside check organised on the M1 by Northamptonshire Police, Leicestershire Police and Vosa revealed that almost half the trucks passing along that section of the motorway were unroadworthy Operation Mermaid, which took place on the M1 near Crick on Wednesday 23 January, checked a total of 35 vehicles, of which 17 were found to have defects. Inspector Nigel Rickaby says: "Ifs disappointing that road hauliers still allow vehicles to be on the roads in a dangerous condition and we will continue to enforce the legislation to make the roads safer for the communities of Northampton."

A total of 12 immediate prohibitions were imposed for a variety of mechanical defects including defective tyres, defective suspension and a missing light assembly. Four more immediate prohibition were issued for breaches of thdrivers' hours regulations and tw. delayed prohibitions were hande. out — one for a vehicle with a miss ing wing; the other for defectiv spray suppression equipment.

Eight of the vehicles stopped i. Operation Mermaid were faun to he overweight and two arrest were made. One driver was cau tioned while the other was wante in another police force area for breach of a community order.
