Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Lubricating off-highway equipment with a series of specialist oils, each performing a specific function, can lead to costly machinery damage. If gear oil is poured into an engine, rapid failure will result; or if hydraulic oil is fed into a gearbox, it will lead to seizure because it does not have sufficient extreme pressure or anti-wear properties.

A multi-functional oil which could be used for all types of vehicles and equipment as well as all their various parts would solve misapplication problems.

A newly developed HiTEC additive package from Ethyl Petroleum Additives Ltd makes such a lubricant possible, and, says the company, provides strong engine performance; base stock compatibility; gear, transmission and compressor performance; and high tolerance to water, while maintaining filterability. The state-of-the art performance of Ethyl's additive package demands the use of high-quality base oils and viscosity modifiers to ensure the finished oil has the rheological properties to cope with all climatic conditions which are particularly important for hydraulics where good perfomiance over a range of ambient temperatures is often an area for concern.

The developments made to ensure hydraulic performance of multifunctional oils for offhighway applications is the subject of a paper being presented by Ethyl on April 9 at the International Construction Exhibition, ICE '87, at Birmingham.
