A Road Haulage Wages Council Order R H(99), which became effective from December 9 last, lays down the statutory minimum rates of remuneration for drivers. Those, driving vehicles of one-ton carrying capacity or less are entitled to £16.18 in London and £16.07 elsewhere at 19 years of age; £18.73 in London and £18.62 elsewhere between 19 and 21 years of age, and £22.23 and £21.97 respectively at 21 years of age or over.

Drivers of larger vehicles with stated carrying capacity must be paid as follows (London rating first): One ton and up to 5 tons £22.23 or £21.97: 5 to 10 tons £22.73 or £22.47; 10 to 15 tons £23.11 or £22.85; 15 to 18 tons £23.61 or £23.35; 18 to 21 tons £24.21 or £23.95; and over 21 tons £24.71 or £24.45. Slightly different rates apply to drivers engaged on furniture removals and milk" workers.

The minimum rate of subsistence is given in the order as £3 for each period of rest taken away from home.
