oil is circulated around the proportion of it is pushed the fine element of the by pass filter. This removes fine particles of foreign matter and water and prevents the formation of sludge and acid inside the engine. The engine oil and full-flow filter element life is extended, but the by-pass element is changed at the manufacturer's recommended periods or at what would have been the normal oil change times.

To ensure that the required volume of oil is circulated through the engine the flow through the by-pass filters is limited by an orifice on the outlet side. It is important that the engine's rated oil pressure is not altered through the fitting of a by-pass filter.

Using a fine-filter element in the full-flow filter would produce oil starvation owing to the rapid choking of the fine element, which looks like a toilet roll, with all the oil contaminants.
