THE COMMER COMMANDO range was introduced almost a year ago, and after initial shortages models are now becoming more readily available.

CM staff members recently visited the workshops of Chrysler truck distributor, Phoenix Motor Co (Surrey) Ltd, at High Street, Sutton, Surrey, in order to cover a routine first service of a 3.5m (11.3ft) wheelbase G7575 Commando. The vehicle was fitted with a box body and had the Perkins 6.354 engine, and four-speed gearbox. It is owned by Design Plan Lighting of Sutton and at the service it had completed an estimated 1,609 km (1,000 miles); the speedometer head had been replaced just before the service. Although later scheduled services cover a greater scope, this first service does provide a good insight into the practicalities of maintaining the vehicle.

Chrysler allocates 3 hours 51 minutes for the service which covers attention to about 30 items. The service is divided into three sections: the first, workshop, covers 13 points from oil-changing to checking battery electrolyte level; the second concerns under-vehicle and engine compartment servicing items such as checking all pipes for leaks or other damage, tension of fanbelt and correct torque settings for the cylinder head, and suspension U-bolts.

The final section, floor level checks, includes brake adjustment and axle track alignment. After th( shop schedule, the brake air-r gauge reading is checked and the road tested. On the return there i inspection for leaks and a ch correct operation of the automat valve on the air reservoir.

Charged materials were 24 Rotella engine oil, £5.31; 11 pini 90 oil for the gearbox and 8 pint: differential, £5.49. The oil fill £2.10 plus VAT.

A full 80,450km (50,000 ml) report on a different Command, will appear in a later issue.
