Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

-E has re-examined ibution methods, and :ided that 11m (36ft) iiler units with four doors on each side e the most economic ; for transporting milk from its Perry ant to 25 Midland dual-axle 32-ton operated are three Pitt, Overlender or n — all hauled by AEC )rs. Its trailers, built imercial and Trailer s Ltd, Adbaston, ire 10.8m (35ft 6in) m (8ft 2in) wide and rt 10in) cargo height. igh the trailers are with 76mm (3in) olyurethane in the Is, roof and floor and 5mm (1n) thick hane in the doors, of the area of the ?nings, further work e to reduce cold loss e trailers by using doer door buffers and 3rush type seals.

Unigate chose the Pelican system, designed by BOC, which is simply a large insulated canister of liquid nitrogen (temperature —196°C; —321°F).

Trailers are fully loaded and the canisters filled with liquid nitrogen, which vents off slowly into a gaseous form and, settling as an inert blanket over the cargo, maintains the milk at its loaded temperature.

An initial problem in using the Pelican system was that the standard BOC Pelican units were designed only to span an eight to 10-hour delivery period, while Unigate needed a unit to cover up to 18 hours.

In order to meet Unigate's requirement BOC redesigned its Pelican unit; and it was necessary to install two BOC Pelican PC100V units in a front bulkhead compartment. The No 1 Pelican is allowed to gas-off freely and the No 2 unit has its gas displacement ducted two thirds of the way along the trailer.

Bulk storage facilities for liquid nitrogen are provided by a vacuum-insulated storage tank on Unigate's premises. The tank is regularly replenished by road tanker from BOC's Wolver

hampton branch.

Unigate's regional transport manager, Mr P. G. Wakeham, said: "The joint development of this project has resulted in a satisfactory system which is completely non-mechanical and maintenance-free."
