After three months of batng through competition ats and semi-finals, Mr Wiln won his way to becoming le of four finalists in the BBC !levision 'bright brains' cornlition, Mastermind, held at Ambridge University.

Narrowly beaten by Roger itchard, a civil servant from rallington, Surrey, Mr Wil Ion, who among other things s a master bridge player, took lefeat gracefully. Commented is mother, Mrs Rose Wilson: 'David seemed to enjoy every round of the competition immensely, and was very happy to have reached the final round."

Every contestant had to answer questions on general knowledge and a specialist subject of their own choosing.

Mr Wilson won a scholarship to Oxford University where he read Philosophy and Psychology. Before graduating he left Oxford and joined the Civil Service. There, he took an exam for advancement and gained the highest marks in the country.

Bored by the Civil Service, he decided to become a lorry driver, and in one week, graduated from holding an ordinary car licence to hgv class 1 . At present working for Clarkes Transport of Sutton Coldfield, his aim now is to get into continental work.
