new .1" 174 licence for six tippers of 3134 tons by John F. Peden (Edinburgh) Ltd. at Edinburgh last week, a short-term continuation licence for an indefinite period was granted by the Scottish Licensing Authority, Mr. A. B. Birnie.

The applicant sought the B licence to replace the short-term one granted in August and expiring on January 31 next for "Coal from Ramsay and Rosslyn Collieries to Bilston Glen Colliery ". Wilson Dobson (Edinburgh) Ltd. objected.

The existing contract with the NCB expires on February 4 and involves 1,100 tons of coal daily, all new work. The NCB has indicated continuation of this work but does not guarantee that Peden

will receive the contract. Press reports have forecast the shut down of Ramsay Colliery in the near future.

Mr. I. Loudon, for the applicant, said that the NCB would not provide witnesses but had asked in this instance for continuation of availability of the vehicles. If Ramsay Colliery shut down obviously there would be three redundant vehicles, Mr. Loudon aflded.

The parties agreed that the position was most uncertain and that a continuation of the short-term condition would be in the best interest as there were no surplus tippers of this type or in such numbers in the area. Mr. Birnie agreed to continue the short-term licence until such time as the position was clarified. A new application could then be made.
