Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A HAULAGE firm would need an extra £12,500 worth of work a year to operate economically if its application to switch seven B-licensed vehicles to A licences were granted, the East Midland Licensing Authority, Mr. C. M. Sheridan, was told in Nottingham last week, A decision was reserved.

The claim was made by Mr. John Langham, representing six objectors, on the third day's hearing of an application by Parkers (Surfleet) Ltd.

But Mr. Stanley Green, for Parkers, said the applicants merely wanted to improve their service to existing customers—small horticulturists in the Spalding area of Lincolnshire. All seven vehicles were at present restricted to a 25-mile radius.

Seven of Parkers' customers—described by Mr. Green as a selection of 700 whose businesses were expanding — gave evidence of difficulties experienced by their produce being collected in one truck and having to be trans-shipped to another vehicle for the journey to wholesale markets all over the country.

They said produce had been either damaged or arrived at the sales point too late to fetch sufficiently high prices. Many problems could be solved if the collection vehicles were allowed to carry the goods direct to market.

Three of the objectors gave evidence and agreed with Mr. Green that their main reason for opposing the application was that Parkers had objected to them when they had made applications earlier this year.
