Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Your report ("EC may help RHA on duty" CM24-30 Aug) says that the European Commissioner for Competition, Mario Monti, is keen to hear of competition issues "especially where there's an element of exploitation".

Is it clear to him that Gordon Brown, in driving up the price of fuel way beyond the level erioyed in other EC countries, is ruthlessly exploiting the fact that we British are an island community? The Chancellor's opposite numbers in Belgium or the Netherlands would never get away with such a ploy because they would be defeated by kilometres-long queues at the fuel pumps just across their borders.

Now that the PHA has discovered the existence of Signor Monti, it should put the case for a level playing field on fuel and against this governments cynical insularity to him in robust terms.
