. East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd. Mr. C. R. H. Wreathall, general manager, said last week that an application to the Yorkshire Licensing Authority was necessary because of the effects of substantial increases in operating costs and a reduced contribution from summer holidaymakers."

DUTCH AUTOMATIC COUPLING AT THE SHOW

AN automatic fifth-wheel semi-trailer coupling is fitted to one of the D.A.F. chassis .to be exhibited at the Commercial Motor Show next month. This Dutch tractor is powered by a D.A.F.-built Leyland Comet oil engine, and is rated for gross train weights of 161 tons when fitted with a single-speed axle and 211 tons with a two-speed unit.

The automatic coupling gear, allows coupling and uncoupling over an are of E80°, and either operation can be performed without the driver leaving the cab. A single control valve locks the coupling, and, when coupled, the hydraulic legs which support the front of the semi-trailer are automatically retracted. The air-brake lines and lighting cables are automatically connected upon coupling. The operation of this system will he demonstrated on the D.A.F. stand
