The Urban District Council of Alton, it is stated, has agreed to provide 2280 towards the cost of a motor fire-engine which it is proposed to provide for the district.

Our Indian correspondent advises us that the City of Calcutta, so pleased is it with its CommerSimonis and Leyland fire-engines, is to take steps to increase its selfpropelled plant.

An 80 h.p. Engine for Hamilton kOntario).

Hamilton, Ont., now boasts of an automobile fire-truck. The truck was recently purchased ; it has a six-cylinder engine, and is capable of attaining a speed of 40 miles an hour. Fire Chief Ten Eyck and the officers of the fire department are highly satisfied with this new 80 h. p. machine.

150 Machines for New:york.

New York City has now decided entirely to .supersede its horsedrawn fire-brigade equipment. Determined not to do things by halves, the Fire Commissioner has been provided with sufficient money to purchase 150 machines, and it is proposed that these shall he secured within eight months. A special board has been appointed to consider the whole subject. Motor-propelled hook-and-ladder trucks, and motor hose-and-chemical wagons are to be the Commissioner's first consideration, as it is held that this class of plant is most urgently required for New York. 1,600 ft. and 5 hrs.

The Dennis engine at Worthing recently had to draw its water supply through 1,600 ft. of hose, and to work continuously for more than five hours. It "behaved perfectly" under these conditions.

Bingley Engines.

The Urban District Council of Bingley is interested in the employment of motor vehicles for fire brigades, and preliminary inquiries are being made on its behalf with regard to the cost of a machine for its district.

Victoria, B.C., Fire Department.

A Canadian correspondent writes :—" The Victoria, B.C., Fire Department's fire-fighting equipment is said to be the finest on the Pacific coast. The motor hose wagon, besides carrying 2,000 ft. of hose-about 500 ft. more than is carried in the ordinary horse-drawn apparatus, is also equipped with a. monitor nozzle, a deluge set, various sized tips for the nozzles, a searchlight, a 25-ft. extension ladder, and other necessary accessories in the way of axes, fire-extinguishers, etc. The combination apparatus carries 1,650 ft. of hose. a chemical engine of a capacity of 45 gallons, and 250 ft. of chemical hose, besides the monitor nozzle and other necessary equipment. The two machines 4..ost 13,059 dollars. Apparatus yet to arrive will cost, for the two engines of 600 gallons per minute, each 10,000 dollars. and the aerial truck, which can be raised by a child in 15 sec., 6,924 dollars."
