Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Autumn has brought increased trade for BCA. Business development manager Duncan

Ward reveals this month's hot properties.

We 're used to tales of auction prices dipping during the holiday period for the obvious reason that potential bidders are lying on a beach trying hard not to think about road haulage. But business remained steady in the auction halls throughout the summer at British Car Auctions, with interest from the trade and endusers across a broad range of vehicles. Supply and demand were well balanced and conversions remained good. And once the holidays were over buyers came out in force. The early autumn days have been exceptionally busy across all sectors of the commercial market.

Allied to this is a relative shortage of stock — as a result buyers are competing strongly for the best examples.

Anticipated value

The heavy CV market attracted a lot of bidders throughout the summer holidays and there was a noticeable increase in buyers seeking vehicles for export. A recent sale at the specialist Belle Vue commercial auction centre saw a lot of interest in a selection of horse boxes, including some that came direct from Greater Manchester Police. Prices were exceptional. with a 1990 Leyland Freighter fetching nearly four times the anticipated value.

In addition to this, buyers continue to show a lot of interest in the specialised areas of the marketincluding tippers with grab-loaders, recovery vehieles, cranes and hook-loaders. Vehicles used in the construction industry are in particular demand with the property boom having a positive effect on used values. are also helping owner-operators who are regular buyers of used commercials. Anything late year and low mileage in a clean condition will attract heavy bidding.

The lightweights

What everyone wants is clean, retail-quality vans and these have been in short supply, so prices have been very strong. In particular, the end-user wants a well-presented vehicle ready to go to work the next day.

Small businesses have been the driving force behind the renaissance in van sales – despite on-going rumblings from some sectors about business confidence.

While economic conditions remain relatively benign and stock is in short supply this demand is set to continue.

Huge crowds

Sales in the early days of September have attracted huge crowds of buyers; Belle Vue and Blackbushe both established new benchmarks for sold volumes in the month.

The market is very receptive to clean examples of the smaller panel vans and these desirable models are making good money.

There are plenty of car-sized vans in the market place, with the cleanest examples attracting lots of attention.

Larger panel vans need to he in good condition and perhaps have something a little different in the specification to attract the buyer's interest. •
