AXLE AND suspension manufacturer Hendrickson's new European MD, Andrew Ward, has hinted that the company might launch a trailer axle in Europe.

Now that Hendrickson is no longer involved in the DaimlerChrysler Discos project,Ward says it's free to market its own trailer axle in Europe, possibly using its factory at Sywell.Northants.

Hendrickson is a major trailer axle supplier in the US and its airsuspended model HDB9 would be the obvious platform for any move into Europe. Ward says if Hendrickson does take a punt at Europe it would he 'disc-brake neutral' so the brake makers have it all to play for.

He accepts that the market is already fairly crowded: "We'll reenter the market when it's appropriate not as a price war.The possibility of Hendrickson launching a European trailer axle is likely to be a hot topic at ArvinMeritor, BPW and SAEnot to mention its one-timepartner, DaimlerChrysler Axle Systems. • Ward says Hendrickson is gaining momentum among the truck manufacturers with its latest 19.5in-wheel mid-lift axle conversion, which was featured on an MAN technology demonstrator at the Hanover show (see report, pages 20-23).

Hendrickson also plans to develop a European market for its Airtek air-sprung front axles and the Hendrickson Torque Box, which replaces a conventional top locating axle A-frame and anti-roll bar, saving up to 200kg.
