• Variable speed limits are being extended round the M25 in a bid to stop drivers crashing into stationary traffic. The Highways Agency's Controlled Motorways Scheme will also be developed with the introduction of text messages.
The High Occupancy (HIOCC) incident-detection system came on line this week between Junctions 10-16.
It detects traffic queues and automatically illuminates speed limit signs of 40 or 60mph on the preceding gantries. Within 60 seconds of the lower limits coming into force, cameras will start capturing vehicles breaking them.
