Recent contracts placed by the War Department with Crossley Motors, Ltd., Gorton, Manchester, are for 191 forward-control six-wheeled chassis, each with a four-cylindered petrol engine, having a capacity of 5,266 c.c. and developing approximately 75 b.h.p. An auxiliary gearbox is fitted, giving an extra range of four low gears for cross-country work.

A number of the chassis is to be equipped with a specially designed engine-driven winch, which can be used for dealing with disabled or ditched vehicles.

Other chassis will be equipped, behind the driver's cab, with a 7.54 kilowatt generator, the drive being taken from a power take-off on the main gearbox.

Another interesting device is tee spare-wheel carrier, which is arranged so that by releasing a catch and rotating the wheel a jointed arm lowers it to the ground, where it can be readily detached. By rotating the wheel in the opposite direction it cart easily be lifted back into position.

Validity of Scottish Agreement.

The Scottish conciliation agreement has not been made permanent for three years, L stated in last week's issue, but is capable of variation by six months' notice by employers or employees. Conversations to this end were, in fact, carried on with a view -to enabling employers to stabilize rates, and the trade unions regarded the matter favourably, but the subject was deferred when the Government committee of inquiry was appointed.

Incidentally, Sir James Badllie, chairman of the committee, when sitting at Edinburgh, last week, commented on the goodwill existing on both sides of the Scottish Conciliation Board.

Soviet Biggest Tractor Producer?

According to the Monthly Review of the U.S.S.R. Trade Delegation in Great Britain, the celebration, this month, of the fifth anniversary of the Stalin Automobile Plant in Moscow and the Molotov Tractor Plant in Kharkov was regarded as a national event.

In five years' operation the Stalin works are stated to have produced about 122,000 3-ton lorries and the Molotov works some 160,000 tractors. It is claimed that Soviet Russia has already achieved first position in the world as regards the production of tractors and that in the case of lorries the country is now second only to the United States, Yorkshire A.R.O. Active.
