Crucible and Case-hardening Furnaces.

From the chassis manufacturer's point of view, there is probably nothing to which it is necessary to give such careful and detailed attention as that of ease-hardening. The many different grades of steel which are brought into use when building up a machine of necessity have to be hardened and treated according to their analysis, and unless a considerable amount of care is taken, the part treated either turns out too brittle or insufficiently case-hardened.

Our illustration shows a self-contained equipment which enables the different temperatures necessary for hardening various classes of steel to be quickly detected with mechanical precision. The outfit is manufactured by S. N. Brayshaw, of Manchester, and is catalogued as the Braysliaw saltbath furnace it can be heated by means of coal gas, producer gas,or heavy oil, and a heat-recording sector is fitted by which the desired temperature for the work in hand can be instantly noted.

This maker markets all kinds of furnaces, burners, crucible plant for melting aluminium, brass, bronze, copper, iron, nickel, etc.

For the hardening of special parts such as flies and reamers the Brayshaw lead-hardening bath is specially recommended. This manufacturer informs us that he has recently compiled a new list, No. 4AF, in which are described and illustrated the many different furnaces which he has placed on the market. Various forms of pyrometers are also described and illustrated. ManOacturers who are considering installing any of this class of plant in their machine shops or tool roomswould do well to write for one. Sternol Oil-testing Machine.

A. great deal of attention is just now being bestowed on the subject of testing lubricating oils, with a view to ascertaining their suitability for the many kinds of uses to which they are put in the industry. We have just received from the Stern Sonneborn Oil Co., Ltd., Royal London House, Finsbury Square, Lon don, E.C., which concern, as our readers are quite aware, has specialized for many years in the manufacture of lubricants an advice that it has evolved a practical form of St'ernol oil-testing machine, which device is capable of testing lubricants under the conditions similar to those which would be imposed by all kinds of machinery, steam and petrol engines, and heavy oil motors.

The device is capable of producing low, medium and high-pressure loads and temperatures. It is therefore only necessary for a client to state his special requirements to this company to be assured of being supplied with lubricants suited for any particular purpose. Samples of lubricant may be submitted to the company and will be tested free of charge, and if desired any responsible person or representative of the inquirer may attend the test.

A Non-skid Triple Tire.

It may be remembered that some time ago we published a description of a unique form of triplex tire ; there are features embodied in its construction which have proved the tire so successful wherever it has been adopted as to merit its being again brought to the notice of our readers. It is made by Chas. Mackintosh and Co., Ltd., 39, Victoria Street, S.W.

Our illustration is a reproduction of a photograph of the latest type of triple tire, and, as will be seen from the lower portion of the picture, the central band stands proud of the outer tires to the extent of 10 min. Two grades of rubber are utilized in the building-up of the component, the two outer bands being constructed of the usual quality of grey rubber, whilst the central band is of specially soft rubber. Its resilient quality, and the fact that it stands out to the extent mentioned, enables a much better grip of the road surface to be obtained. These tires. which are made under Coleman's patent, have met with considerable approval from the various users who have fitted them. Chas. Macintosh and Co., Ltd., informs us that the London Fire Brigade has recently placed an order for these patent triple non skids.
