Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"Errors" concerning drivers' hours under the Working Time Directive have

been uncovered by the T&G. Sally Nash reports.

DHI. EXEL Supply Chain has admitted -administrative errors" after union officials discovered that drivers' time sheets at the company's site in Redditch. Worcestershire had been changed by managers without the drivers' knowledge. TheTransport & General Workers Union (T&G) uncovered the changes in August when one driver checked his time sheet after the company said he needed to complete extra driving hours to fulfil his contract. The T&G says the changes were made in red ink by local managers to show the drivers as being on a period of availability instead of driving under Working Time Directive rules.

Since then the T&G says it has uncovered several other drivers among the 40 who work on the same contract whose time sheets had been altered to show them being on periods of availability rather than accepting the drivers' declarations.

"DHL Exel in Redditch has acknowledged that managers changed drivers' time sheets without informing the individuals concerned," says Bob Shaw, T&G regional industrial organiser.

"But the worry is the admission had to be dragged out of them and there were more instances than they first acknowledged."

He also says that not only is there a potential safety issue for its drivers if their time sheets are being doctored, but there are other safety issues.

In a written statement. DHL Exel Supply Chain says the corn pany investigated this issue in August. -Administrative errors were discovered on time sheets for three drivers and immediately corrected." it explains. "We have since improved the system in place, with the approval of the union, to ensure that all drivers' hours are properly accounted for.

"It should be stressed that the errors arising were purely administrative without any intention to misrepresent drivers' hours.

"These errors did not cause drivers to breach the limit of the hours they can legally work under the Working Time Directive."

DHL said it takes these allegations very seriously, stressing that the incident relates to the Redditch site only and does not reflect any other DHL operations.
