Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Colin Sowman • Fuel savings of 4% are possible using the latest low rolling resistance truck tyres, claims Michelin. The Energy range (E-range) of tyres uses a stiffer casing in the tread area, advanced materials and a new generation of tread designs to achieve a 20% reduction in rolling resistance.

This reduction will equate to a 6% improvement in fuel economy at 80km/h, says Michelin.

However, as tyres wear their rolling resistance decreases and just before regrooving, the difference in rolling resistance falls to 50/0.

This could cause discrepancies if operators measure fuel consumption on worn normal tyres against a set of new Energy tyres. This would show a worsening of fuel consumption on the new tyres.

Not all operations will find the 7% price premium for Energy tyres cost effective. Benefits will only show on vehicles with lots of motorway running. says Michelin. If a truck is wearing out a set of front XZA tyres in under 160,000km, an E-range tyre would be more suitable, it says.

In addition to the fuel saving benefits, Michelin claims its Energy XDA is the quietest drive axle tyre on the market.

Also, the Energy range is said to have a wear life equal to the conventional A-range with equal or improved traction and no degradation in ride and handling quality.

Energy tyres will not immediately be available to operators as Michelin wants to make sure any trial is set up on a sound basis. Michelin is offering calculations on a free floppy disc to operators interested in Energy tyres, to

help highlight any potential savings.
