Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• South Yorkshire Transport took over another Sheffield independent operator last weekend — its fourth in two months.

The routes and goodwill of Mike Groves have been bought for £150,000. Groves' bus operation will close with over 30 redundancies.

SYT subsidiaryiSLIT has taken over Groves' four commercial routes, but none of his buses, so Groves is disposing of his 14 buses, although he may continue to operate a small number of coaches on tours and private hire.

The Groves bus operation started on deregulation day and grew to its present size over the past three years in spite of heavy competition. A complaint was made to the Office of Fair Trading during 1987 and SYT was found guilty of unfair competition.

The latest takeover leaves only two independent operators in Sheffield with more than 10 buses in service.
