Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

S0 many factors influence the rate of deterioration of oil in an engine that it is not possible to quote mileages at which oil should in general be changed. This was the main conclusion arrived at after a discussion—" How often should engine oil be drained? "—at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London on Tuesday.

It was the theme with which A. Towle of Lubrizol International Laboratories, Derby, opened the discussion and was repeated by many other speakers. Mr. Towle said that the problem of oil change periods was complex because deterioration of oil was due to oxidation and various types of contamination. Many engines were 'today designed to take advantage of additives in oil, put there to counteract the effect of these and the life of the oils depended on when these additives were used up. This varied between engines even in the same mode!.

The oil company -representatives who spoke agreed with the statement on the same subject that changes of between 2,000 and 3,000 miles should be aimed at. Against this Mr. Martin of Lyons said he used a good quality oil which was changed at around 6,000 miles, with filter changes at around 3,000 to 4,000 miles. A representative of London Transport Executive said that the L.T.E. changed oil at between 13,000 and 15,000 miles and did not use oil filters (after initial run-in) or air. filters. In spite of this, mainshaft bearing mileages of between 200,000 and 300,000 were obtained with bore wear figures of between 27,000 and 30,000 miles per 0.001 in. He stressed that the L.T.E. practice was based on experience in London. Mr. Barnet of B.M.C. said that the degree of pressure across the oil filter element gave a good indication of the need for change of oil.
