availability, travel needs and actual travelling are to be carried out as soon as staff are available in six selected rural areas of Britain, the Minister of Transport announced on Tuesday.

The areas chosen are: West of Crediton, Devon; North of Horncastle, Lincolnshire; North of Kirkby Stephen Westmorland; Near ,Tomintoul, Banffshire; West of Dumfries, Kirkcudbrightshire; and West of Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.

Each survey will cover some 20 sq. mls. and populations ranging between 500 and 1,500. As the areas are small, a fully comprehensive survey over a period of a complete week will be made. Each area has been selected to present different geographical and transport factors and should provide a good cross section.
