New Portable Fluorescent Light

THERE are many occasions when a source of fluorescent light is far more useful than the comparatively restricted illumination afforded by a normal light bulb. This has been recognized by Engineering Developments (England), Ltd., Mark Road, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, who have recently introduced a portable fluorescent light unit known as the EDM 103.

A 2-ft. 40w. tube is used working on 230v. or 240v mains current. The lamp

can be swivelled through an angle of 180°. whilst the reflector can be tilted to any angle.

With the lamp in the horizontal position the light is 10 in. from the ground. which enables the lamp to be used beneath a vehicle. When so placed, the reflect& can be adjusted to direct the light upwards. The overall height of the unit when standing vertically is 3 ft. 6 in.

A power-take-off plug is built into the base of the lamp, so that portable electric tools can be connected direct to the unit. The necessary control gear is also built into the base.

A Simple Seat Fixing A SIMPLE method of securing the I 1. cushion of a bus seat is by means of the new Flexilant grip. It is a rubber moulding, its section being such that when attached in the correct position on the bottom of the seat cushion. the gripping portion will partly encircle the tube of the seat frame.

It has many other applications, in all of which the principle of instant attachability and detachability applies. It is made by Rubber Bonders, Ltd., Dunstable, Beds.

An Anti-freeze Tester CONTINUAL topping-up of a radia

`—' tor containing an anti-freeze mixture may result in so diluting the anti-freeze solution that there is a danger of the water in the cooling system freezing up. Smiths Motor B20 Accessories, Ltd., 50 Oxgate Lane, London, N.W.2, who are responsible for Bluecol anti-freeze solution, have introduced a tester which combines a hydrometer and thermometer.

The hydrometer, when inserted in the solution, indicates the density and temperature of the coolant being tested and reference to a calculator shows whether the Bluecol solution is of the correct strength. If it is not, the quantity of Bluecol necessary to bring the mixture to the recommended strength is given on the calculator. Complete with calculator the price is fl 10s.

Tube Bending Simplified ,6, FEATURE of the Staffa hand

operated tube bender is the method employed in securing the tube during bending. Not only is it prevented from slipping, but a minimum length of tube is gripped.

This results in close-set bends being obtained with marked economy in material. The Type TRU/1 tool is capable of bending light-gauge ferrous and non-ferrous tubes of up to 1i in. diameter and steam and gas tube up to

in. n.b.

The forming of a tube is by compression bending over an accurately machined centre-forming die and slipper. The throat ratio of the bend is equal to three times the diameter and bends of up to 180° can be produced cold and unloaded.

Without forming dies, the bender is priced at £18 3s. 3d. The makers are Chamberlain Industries, Ltd., Staffa Works, Leyton, London, E.10.

A Clip-on Handlamp A N addition to the range of Gripper 1. handlamps, known as the Grippalite, has been introduced by the British Central Electrical Co., Ltd., 6 and 8 Rosebery Avenue, London, E.C.1. A crocoslile clip enables the lamp to he secured to any suitable support.

The Grippalite is constructed of four polystyrene mouldings and is claimed to be practically indestructible. S.C.C. bulbs to suit any vehicle battery voltage can be supplied up to a maximum of 24w. The finish is such that the handlamp can be quickly wiped clean. Complete with 12 ft. of flex and two large crocodile clips for connecting to the battery, the price is 13s, 6d.
